Greetings from Alex & Zack of Zine Hug!
We have been hard at work preparing a holiday maker’s market with the great folks at Reclaim Clay Collective. Reclaim Clay is a POC, Queer, Women-owned pottery and riso studio in Seattle’s Chinatown - International District. If you’re looking for a special gift for a special someone, come out tomorrow night to Goodnight Market!
We’re stoked to include some of our favorite PNW risograph printers in Goodnight Market, including ANEMONE, Cold Cube, Living Room Press, play.ground, Really Easy Press, Secret Room Press, Snack Time, superlychee, Yewon Kwon, and more. Also look for other handmade goods including the pottery created by Reclaim Clay community instructors and members :) And cream puffs by Akio’s Bakery!
We went all-out creating custom risograph holiday cards, gift tags, and wrapping paper for the event. The first 50 people to arrive will get a free holiday card and all money raised from gift wrapping will be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.
We’ll have copies of our riso books and prints there, including our newest zine, “RISO Animation: Zine Hug’s How To Guide,” and our newest comic, “Sun Cell Volume 2" by Alex Barsky.
“RISO Animation: Zine Hug’s How To Guide” is a comprehensive 45-page guide to creating riso animation, which transforms digital video into a new medium using the analog risograph printing process. We’ve been creating risograph animation regularly for a few years now and this book contains process and tips to successfully approach this fairly new art form.
“Sun Cell Volume 2” is Alex Barsky’s follow-up to her original 2018 Sun Cell comic. Alex is hugely influenced by the shōnen manga of her childhood and this is her attempt at creating an all-ages sci-fi comic in that genre. In Sun Cell 2, Yam wins Battery City's lottery to be drafted into their military system but has doubts about becoming a soldier. This is a 34-page comic risograph printed in Black, Bright Red, and Sunflower.
You can purchase these books in the RISO Bookstore, a new collaboration between ANEMONE, Zine Hug, and other print friends. We were brainstorming ideas to make it easier to buy books from local risograph publishers in one place, without making people pay shipping multiple times from multiple online shops - and so, the RISO Bookstore was born!
The shop is still under construction, but keep checking back for new risograph books. We’ll post a big update of books that include new publishers next week!
And finally, our last Riso Animation workshop of the year is next week in Portland, OR at the Secret Room Work•Shop in the Lloyd Center! We are really excited to collaborate with our buddies at Secret Room Press and we animated their mascot, Pit-Pat, for the workshop flier! Find more information and sign up for the workshop here.
If you can’t make it to the workshop on December 17th, you can still check out the Secret Room Work•Shop storefront, gallery space, and events until December 23rd. You can buy some of our comics there and at Floating World Comics down the hall! See their schedule here.
That’s it from us for this year! We’re really looking forward to new books, more workshops and festivals, and regular (monthly?) newsletters in 2024.
Drop us a line by replying to this newsletter and we hope you have a wonderful New Year.
-Alex & Zack
