Upcoming Events
Weโll be at Reclaim Clay Collective for our final IRL Risograph Animation workshop of the year! RECC is a community art space in Seattleโs Chinatown-International District - check out their other pottery and Intro to Riso classes, too!
This animation was printed with Mahogany and Mint ink. In our risograph animation workshops, we show students how to set up and print contact sheets like this:
And then weโll show everyone how to turn the scanned print back into a video.
For those of you who canโt make it in person, weโll have our last Virtual workshop of 2023 on October 1st. Weโre cranking up the spookiness for this one and will give everyone the option of printing on black paper, like in this flier:
This is mint ink on black paper. All risograph inks have a degree of transparency, so certain colors show up better on darker paper than others. Some are surprising! Weโll do the usual riso animation workshop + talk about preparing inverted files for printing on darker paper.
After these two riso workshops, weโre going to focus on making new books. Weโre currently working on a How To Risograph Animation zine and are hoping to release it in October :) And Alex has been saying sheโs gonna finish her comic, Sun Cell 2, this Fallโฆ.really!
To wrap up the year, weโll be at Portland Zine Symposium on Saturday 10/28 and Short Run Seattle on 11/4. Weโll also be in Los Angeles on 11/18 - more info on that to be announced soon.
*Note that weโll be at Portland Zine Symposium on Saturday, 10/28 instead of Sunday, 10/29. We will definitely be lurking around on Sunday as well, and encourage everyone to check out the different artists on each day!
Scene Report
Weโve already jumped into our Fall tour with back-to-back-to-back shows at the Bremerton, San Francisco, and Olympia Zine Fests. Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by, checked out our stuff, and signed up for this newsletter. It was our first time attending all 3 fests and we are planning to stay on the West Coast for the rest of the year.
Bremerton (about an hour drive from Seattle) had their first zine fest this year and it was attended by their Mayor and the cityโs Poet Laureate ๐ณ It felt like a big deal! The fest was outdoors at a park with around 20 tables. There was a good turn out for a first-time fest and it was nice to be able to take some time to walk around and talk to other people selling their zines.
San Francisco Zine Fest was huge! There must have been over 100 people tabling and it was so busy we didnโt have a chance to explore beyond our immediate area. A really big festival like this can be overwhelming from the perspective of someone walking around, so a big thank you to everyone who attended and helped us sell out of almost everything we brought!
Our cat, Toki, was having trouble eating this week, so Zack stayed home while Alex went to the Olympia Zine Fest solo. Luckily, this was a more chill fest with around 30-40 tables and we were tabling with our riso friends Living Room Press, Anemone, and Common Area. It was really nice to table with friends under a cherry tree and feel the closeness of the comix and riso communities in the PNW :)
Weโll send out one more newsletter in December for 2023 - canโt believe weโre already cooking up big plans for 2024! ๐
